Term 3 | Week 9
Kia ora e te whānau,

As we approach the end of a very unusual Term 3, it seems disappointing that we can’t celebrate the successes of our students in the normal way with our end of term assembly. We should, however, count ourselves amongst the fortunate group that have fewer COVID restrictions on our lives than others. I cannot imagine how it would feel just making the move into Alert Level 3 now and admire the strength of the teachers and students who have continued learning apart in all the time we have been back together.

This week marked the start of a journey towards building the new school. We had our first Master Planning Sessions with the Ministry of Education and Architect teams. I’ve written a little more about the process in an article within the newsletter. The feeling from the teachers involved in the first session was both excitement and relief to actually begin the process!

In further news, the retirement of Miss Stevie Douglas is now confirmed. As you may know, she has been on sick leave for a number of weeks. We’re looking forward to taking the opportunity to celebrate the career of Miss Douglas once we move into an Alert Level 1 situation and are able to bring the community together. We’ll be looking to advertise a permanent role for a new entrant teacher in the coming weeks.

Enjoy the long weekend!

He waka eke noa,

Stevie's Retirement

It is with sincere regret that the school recognises Stevie Douglas’s desire to retire from teaching after a long and dedicated career as new entrant teacher at Twizel Area School. Stevie in her forty years plus has taught many of our Twizel community members.

Puketeraki Marae Visits

Master Planning for New Build

We are in the fortunate position that we will be designing a completely new school for our learners. This process is lengthy and does not go unsupported by the Ministry of Education and other specialists such as architects and project managers.

High Flying Students

What a fantastic spring day yesterday for four of our Gliding students to have their first every flight in a glider. After getting a full briefing from their instructor, Nic was the first to take to the air for a smooth 20-minute flight.

Exam Week Year 11-13

Our school Exam Week has been ‘compressed’ into three days in order to reduce disruption to students following the COVID Alert Level changes and the dates adjusted to be in line with the NetNZ Online Learning Exams.

Room 13 Olympic Pictograms

Room 13 students have been doing some artwork that we had planned to do earlier in the term. We have been looking at the Olympic Pictograms, creating a background using different shades from the same colour. The students made a range of shapes and lines with their pencil and coloured each area a different…

Breadtags for Wheelchairs

Twizel Kindergarten are collecting bread tags for recycling. They will go to an awesome charity to help buy wheelchairs for people in South Africa. If you'd like to donate your used breadtags, you can either drop them here at school (for us to pass on) or at the Twizel Kindergarten.

M1 Stop Motion Animation

In week 7, M1 students made scientific stop motion animations. They used a spinning wheel to choose their groups and each group had to choose a category that their stop motion would be about.
