This week we started the junior school field trips to Te Maiharoa pou. This is a taonga of the region and one that represents more than we think.

The pou represents the Waitaha people of this takiwa and how a man by the name of Te Maiharoa started a movement that is said to have inspired the peaceful protest at Parihaka 1881.

This is the beginning of a series of field trips that we will be having throughout the year. Term one is Te Maiharoa, Term two is Punatahu (mahika kai site), Term four is Aoraki National park. All of these will incorporate pūrakau māori and New Zealand / Aotearoa history.

For me it has been an enjoyable experience spending time with our youngest students of Twizel Area School, this is one of the many reasons why Area Schools are great to be a part of.
