This Term, Room 7 and 8 ฤkonga have been involved in the Get Firewise Programme for Year 1 and 2 students. They were fortunate enough to get a visit from The Twizel Fire Brigade last week to learn about fire safety in their homes. ๐Ÿš’ ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿš’

The students worked through a sequenced programme of learning experiences designed to give five- and six-year-olds knowledge, attitudes and behaviours that will keep them safe around fire. The students learned behaviours that will keep them from starting fires, such as not playing with matches and lighters.

It focused on:

  • not playing with matches and lighters
  • being safe near fires
  • understanding that fire can be dangerous
  • knowing what to do if there is a fire in a room
  • practising evacuating from a room in a fire emergency.

This programme has provided opportunities to link with home through the take-home book that students can complete with family members. This facilitates a discussion around escape plans and safe meeting places in the home environment.

The final part of the programme was a visit by the firefighters and the opportunity to go through the  Evacuation Challenge maze. The children loved venturing their way through the dark maze by themselves and then with a buddy to test their skills on “Get down, Get low, Get out - Fast!”

A huge thank you to Mitchell, Dan, Nicola and Tash of the Twizel Fire Brigade for coming into school to share this experience with the students and help keep our community Fire Wise.
