The Southern Area Schools Tournament was held this year in Owaka, hosted by The Catlins Area School. With 30 students representing Twizel Area School, the week was packed with competition, teamwork, and unforgettable memories.

Our students stayed at the Thomas Catlins Lodge, a unique experience in itself. Formerly an old hospital, the lodge still features hospital-style fittings—including old beds—which added an unexpected twist to the accommodation!

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mrs Frost, Mr Van M, Ms Smith, and Ms Saunders for accompanying the students and supporting them throughout the tournament. A special thank you also goes to Monica and Les for their time and commitment in coaching our basketball teams—your efforts made a huge difference.

The weather was on our side all week, and the tournament ran smoothly under clear skies. One of the highlights off the court was the social evening—a lively hoedown where students embraced the theme with enthusiasm, even forming a memorable dance circle!

On the sports fields and courts, Twizel Area School truly shone:

🏐 Netball Girls – Champions!

Our netball girls played with heart and intensity throughout the tournament. In their final game, they dominated from the first whistle, moving the ball swiftly and defending with strength. Their teamwork and positive energy led them to a convincing win—well deserved champions!

🌟 A huge congratulations to Riley and Jackson, who were awarded Fair Play certificates for their outstanding sportsmanship across the tournament.

We are incredibly proud of the following students who were selected for the National Area School Teams across various sports:

Riley, Hazel H, Hazel M, Myah, Paige, Kiara, Jackson, Jaxon, Mason, Chase, Mark, Zack, and Tom. These students will go on to represent our region in Netball, Volleyball, Basketball, Ki O Rahi, and Football.

We wish them all the best as they prepare to compete at Nationals in Invercargill during the first week of the school holidays—go hard, team!

This year’s tournament was a brilliant showcase of what TAS students are all about: determination, respect, teamwork, and fun.
