Senior Biology students recently had the opportunity to take part in a practical genetics lab run by two scientists from the University of Otago. The session introduced students to real-world laboratory techniques, including the use of restriction enzymes and gel electrophoresis to analyse genetically modified plasmids. This visit was designed to support key areas of the NCEA Biology curriculum. For Year 12 students, the lab reinforced their understanding of gene expression, while Year 13 students were able to apply the experience directly to their internal assessment on human manipulation and genetic transfer. The hands-on nature of the session helped students make meaningful connections between theory and practice. It also offered a glimpse into how genetics is used in current research and industry settings.Students responded well to the opportunity, and we’re grateful to the University of Otago for helping to enrich our science programme with this valuable experience.
