The Maadi Rowing Regatta at Lake Karapiro has once again showcased the dedication and talent of Twizel Area School’s rowing teams. Competing against top schools from across New Zealand, our rowers delivered commendable performances, reflecting their hard work and perseverance throughout the season.


Girls Under-18 Double Sculls

Kiara Thyne and Sadie Mason proved to be a formidable duo in the highly competitive Girls Under-18 Double Sculls event. After a dominant performance in Heat 1, where they placed 1st with a time of 7:38.49, they progressed to the semi-finals. In Semi-final 1, they finished 3rd (8:08.42), securing their place in the A Final. In an intense and closely contested race, the pair delivered an outstanding effort to claim 2nd place in the A Final with a time of 7:58.84, earning a well-deserved silver medal.

Girls Under-18 Coxless Pair Oars

Kiara Thyne and Sadie Mason also took on the challenge of the Coxless Pair event. They started strong with a 2nd place finish in Heat 3 (8:09.15), advancing to the repechage. There, they placed 2nd (8:12.02), earning their way to the semi-finals. In Semi-final 2, they finished 3rd (8:22.43), securing a place in the prestigious A Final. Despite fierce competition, they delivered a solid race, finishing 7th in the A Final with a time of 7:56.76.

Girls Under-18 Coxed Quad Sculls

Twizel’s squad of Kiara Thyne, Sadie Mason, Lucia Yates, and Hazel Henderson, with coxswain Jazmine Baikie, put in an exceptional team performance in the Girls Under-18 Coxed Quad Sculls event. They placed 2nd in Heat 1 (7:45.99), before delivering a commanding 1st place finish in Repechage 1 (7:48.59). Their momentum continued in Semi-final 1, where they placed 2nd (8:05.50), earning a spot in the A Final. In a thrilling final race, they narrowly missed the podium by 0.15 seconds, securing 4th place with a time of 7:14.11 – an incredible achievement against some of the country’s top crews.

Girls Under-16 Single Sculls

Lucia Yates showed great perseverance in the Girls Under-16 Single Sculls event. In Heat 3, she placed 4th with a time of 9:10.48, progressing to the repechage. She gave another solid effort in Repechage 2, finishing 6th with a time of 9:09.86.

Girls Under-17 Single Sculls

Hazel Henderson took on the challenge of the Girls Under-17 Single Sculls, competing against a tough field. In Heat 6, she placed 6th with a time of 9:48.59, gaining valuable experience at this high level of competition.

The experiences gained at Lake Karapiro will undoubtedly serve as a foundation for future accomplishments.
