Our Senior Science classes had an great week with new teacher Mrs Dixon, with Year 11 learning about microorganisms in food production, and Year 12 investigating the inner workings of sheep hearts .

Microorganisms in food production

The 1SCI class has been investigating how environmental conditions affect life processes of microorganisms, and relating this to food production.

This week, we have done a few practical activities:

  • We made yoghurt in the Food Tech classroom to take home (which uses bacteria!)
  • Students investigated the growth of bread mould in different conditions and inspected mould under the microscope
  • We compared the respiration rate of yeast in different temperatures

Students are gaining confidence in describing the life processes of different microorganisms and explaining how these are affected by abiotic and biotic factors in the environment.

Well done to everyone involved!

Level 2 Biology Heart Dissection

The Level 2 Biology class is learning about the adaptations of plants or animals to their way of life.  This includes the physiology of the transport and gas exchange systems.

This week, the students had the opportunity to investigate sheep hearts to help them understand the structure and function of the different parts of the heart. They worked safely with the dissection equipment and asked lots of questions, which showed they are thinking deeply about how these structures work to improve the efficiency of the cardiovascular system.

Well done!
