The much anticipated South Island Secondary School netball tournament took place last week in Invercargill with our team returning as winners of the C Grade competition.

Sadie, Kiara, Riley, Hazel M, Hazel H, Lily, and Myah all attended, accompanied by Amelia from The Catlins Area School & Meadow from Waiau Area School.

The team's results for the Tournament:

  • 48-18 win vs. Kaikorai Valley College
  • 42-9 win vs. East Otago High School
  • 33-21 win vs. Catholic Cathedral College
  • 47-17 win vs. Mountain View High School
  • 34-21 win vs. Lawrence Area School
  • 29-13 win vs. Mackenzie College
  • 35-28 win vs. Northern Southland College

Going into the final, we knew it was anyone's game. We both had rested players in the previous game, so we knew we had a battle on our hands. All I can say is this was the most intense game of the tournament, and our students left everything on the court. The score fluctuated by 1 or 2 points at a time, putting Northern Southland ahead, then we were ahead. The clock stopped in the final minute, and we had no idea how long was left, and we were only up by 1 goal with Northern Southland's ball. A fantastic turnover by the defence gave us one last shot at goal as the final whistle blew, our girls celebrated with laughter and tears.

What a win for Twizel Area School, 28-26 against Northern Southland College. C Grade CHAMPIONS!

Thank you to everyone who supported our fundraising ventures, and also to Tony and Kura from the Lake Ruataniwha Holiday Park who sponsored the team's evening meals at Speights Ale House; it's easy to say this was a high for the trip.

A big thank you to Jazz Quinn, Kat, Dwayne & Boston Burgess, who all accompanied me on the trip to help and support the girls.

This trip is not only about playing netball; it's a great opportunity to give our students experiences they might not have done before. It was an absolute honour to be able to provide and facilitate this experience.

Congratulations to Sadie, Kiara, Hazel M., and Amelia, who were all named as up-and-coming players for 2023 C Garde. The girls are already preparing for next year's tournament in Christchurch!
