Junior classes (with the help of some fabulous Middle Schoolers) have been learning about the purakau (story) of the creation of Aoraki Mount Cook, and other local landscape features. 🏔️

This task was to work co-operatively to create a model showing Aoraki and some or all of the features below:

  • Some of the other mauka / mountains in Kā Tiritiri o te Moana / the Southern Alps
  • Haupapa Tasman Glacier
  • Tasman Roto / Tasman Lake
  • Tasman Awa / Te Awa-whaka-mau / Tasman River
  • Roto Pūkākī / Lake Pūkākī

Some ropu / groups or individuals also included other features:

  • Te ra / the sun
  • Toka / kōwhatu / rocks
  • Hukarere / snow
  • Hukapapa / ice

This was an excellent opportunity for students to practice Awhinataka (respect and caring), Whanaungataka (working together) and for some students to show Ārahi (leadership).

Room 13 students explained their models to M1 / Year 7 students and received feedback in excellent tuakana-teina practice!
