On Tuesday and Wednesday, Twizel Area School hosted Marianne Marot, from the Department of Conservation (DoC), who talked to various classes about animal traps.

This initiative aims to safeguard the local ecosystem and protect native wildlife from potential threats. During the session, the children had a unique opportunity to witness the traps in action, using soft toys to demonstrate the trapping process. The session included interactive elements such as observing stuffed Stoats, ferrets, weasels, and a bobcat, allowing the children to familiarize themselves with these invasive predators.

The students listened to a story and watched a video. The story was about a heroic kiwi protecting its egg from these predators, highlighting traps' crucial role in preserving our native bird species. It was great to increase the children's awareness about the significance of animal traps and foster a sense of responsibility towards wildlife conservation.

Thank you to Marianne for taking the time to come and talk to our students about this very important (and local) subject.
