Friday was Fried Bread | Pāraoa Parai Friday at Twizel Area School. Students joined with teachers and members of our school community to make over 500 portions of fried bread, enjoyed by everyone!

There is nothing more satisfying than making bread and there is nothing more heartwarming than making & sharing kai as a community!  Ka pai to everyone who measured, kneaded, cut, fried, served, and of course, ate!

For community members who are interested, here is the recipe we used:

2 cups of lukewarm water
2 Tablespoons of Raw sugar
2 teaspoons of yeast

Stir this lightly then let this sit for 10 minutes to activate the yeast.

Add 1 cup of plain flour to start with. Keep adding flour till it is a soft dough.

Once soft place the dough onto a floured surface and kneed

Clean the bowl we have just used and lightly oil it. This will be used for the dough to be placed into to cultivate.

Wait for 1 hour. Once it has doubled in size place it onto a floured surface and spread it out.

Cut into medium-sized pieces and fry until golden.
