Last Sunday, seven students left Twizel accompanied by Chelsea and Clare Frost to travel to Timaru to take part in the South Island Secondary School Netball Tournament.

Although this tournament is predominantly for Year 11-13 students, we thought it would be a great experience for our mostly Year 9-10 team. We were lucky enough to be joined by Jazz and two Waiau Area School Students, Alyssa and Meadow.

Day One was a tough day for our kids however they held their own and only lost by what we call small margins considering our players age.

  • Oxford Area School 32 - 16 Twizel Area School
  • Opihi College 26- 21 Twizel Area School

Unfortunately, after not gaining a win on the first day of the tournament we couldn't make the top 8 and would play in the bottom 8 teams of C Grade. The team then decided we would go for Best of the Rest.

On Day Two, Louie Skinner joined the team to make our squad a team of 10.

  • South Westland Area School 27 - 20 Twizel Area School
  • East Otago High School 10 - 42 Twizel Area School

What a win the girls had today! It raised everyone's spirits as we looked forward to days 3-4 of the tournament.

Day Three

  • Amuri Area School 34 - 16 Twizel Area School
  • Mountain View College 9 - 22 Twizel Area School

The students were so excited to see Mr Johnson, the old maths teacher from Twizel Area School who came to support them. Mr Johnson now teaches at Mountain View but was always a Twizel Supporter at Heart!

Day Four

SEMI-FINALS

  • Northern Southland College 13 - 20 Twizel Area School

What a win this was! The girls used what they had learned over the last few days, worked as a team and took away the win. Looking into the final games the girls were very nervous as they were to come up against Amuri Area School which they had previously lost to by 15 points

FINALS GAME playing off for 9th and 10th

  • Amuri Area School 18 - 24 Twizel Area School

What a win the girls dug in deep and pulled off a beautiful win. Emotions were high at the final whistle. The girls played their hearts out and really did get the best of the rest taking home 9th place in C Grade.

A big thank you to everyone for their support, the parents who supplied meals and travelled down to watch a game or two. A massive thank you to Clare, Jazz and Kate Anderson for their coaching and support over the week.

What an epic tournament and I can't wait for next year already!

Read Sadie's experience of the tournament here:

We participated in the south island secondary schools netball tournament, we combined with Waio to make our team of 10. The tournament took place in Timaru at the Aorangi park. Our team played in the C grade and came 9th out of 16. Considering it was a senior tournament and the majority of our team was Yr 9 and 10, I think we did really well.

It was a great experience and we all had a lot of fun.
