It's 2022 already! The school is already buzzing with staff excitement for the new school year. We're looking forward to the students returning refreshed after their break.

I'm excited to start a school year with the knowledge of how the school systems work and to begin to shape our shared future. We start our new year with optimism that the COVID Traffic Light System will improve our ability to share student successes and events with you. A detailed summary of our Health and Safety Plan can be found here: Traffic Light System At Twizel Area School

Following initial ‘settling-in’ days at school, we will be hosting a pōhiri to welcome our new staff and students. This will be held at 11 am on Tuesday 8th February at the front entrance of the school. Parents who wish to attend will need to have a vaccine passport available and will have a designated seating area. This will be the first of many opportunities for us to meet. Another such opportunity will be a barbeque to welcome our learners back to school and to offer an opportunity to meet our teaching staff. The barbeque will be held on February 17th from 4.30 - 6 pm at the rear foyer. Vaccine passports will be required for all attendees over the age of 12 years and 3 months as per nationwide gathering rules.

At the start of the term, we welcome three new members of staff. Freya Haanen joins us as our English Curriculum Specialist and Homeroom Teacher of M3 (covering Mrs. Smit’s refreshment leave for 2022), John van Mulbregt takes on the role of Technology Teacher in the secondary area and Brooke Smith as the Room 7, new entrant and Year 1 Teacher. Each will be featured in an upcoming newsletter so that the community can learn more about them personally, and the skills and talents they bring to Twizel Area School. I am sure that all three of them will soon become accustomed to the rhythms and systems of Twizel and Twizel Area School – in the meantime, they'll need to lean on your local expertise to guide them.

There are a few items of note as we reach the final stages of the holiday:

  • NCEA results are now available online. Students can log in using the NZQA Student Hub.
  • Senior students (Years 11-13) should attend their Course Confirmation at 10 am on Tuesday, February 1st. Uniforms are not required. This will be held in the Multipurpose Room.
  • School starts for everyone on Thursday, February 3rd. 8.40 am for Years 7-13, and 8.50 am for Years 1-6. Please ensure you have your PE and swimming gear available along with your stationery from day 1.
  • Stationery and 2nd hand uniforms are available at the school office from January 26th onwards (10 am-12 pm and 1-3 pm).
  • Students should wear their full, correct uniform as soon as school starts. Please ensure it is named!
  • BYOD (Bring your own device) – Students in Years 7 and above should bring their own device to school. More information is available on our school website: BYOD
  • Visitors – please continue to sign in at the office for Health and Safety reasons. Masks are required for appointments with school staff. Pick-ups and drop-offs remain external to the school buildings, masks should be worn.
  • Twizel Area School is moving to a new Student Management System - Kamar. This will enable better information transfer regarding attendance, student achievement, reports etc. We’ll be sending through further details and a parent login very soon.
  • Sun Protection – don’t forget your hat if you want to play outside!

We will be reporting back on our excellent NCEA results in an upcoming 2022 newsletter; there are undoubtedly many congratulations to pass on to our senior students – they faced and overcame unprecedented challenges in 2020 and 2021. Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei!
